The Challenge:

Working during operational hours at this busy London transport hub required careful site management to maintain passenger safety and minimise disruption. The section of canopy overhanging the DLR tracks presented particular access difficulties, requiring innovative solutions to reduce the need for disruptive possessions while maintaining quality and safety standards.

Our Approach:

Our team established a segregated worksite using Heras panels while maintaining clear passenger access to the booking hall and ticket vending machines. All preparatory work on the canopy was conducted from mobile towers wrapped with debris netting to prevent paint flakes and other materials from affecting platform users. Additional protective sheeting was laid across the platform to capture all debris, ensuring passenger safety throughout.

Overcoming Challenges:

A particular challenge emerged with the section of canopy overhanging the DLR tracks. Our project team devised an innovative solution by carefully measuring the opposite ends of the canopy and fabricating necessary materials early in the process. This approach significantly reduced the need for additional DLR possessions and scaffold re-erection.

We installed the base and kentledge during out-of-hours working, allowing the cantilever to be built only during possession access periods. This strategic approach minimised disruption to both DLR services and station users while maintaining programme efficiency.

Key Achievements:

Through meticulous planning and execution, we delivered these essential restoration works whilst keeping this important transport interchange fully operational throughout. The restored canopy now provides improved protection for passengers while maintaining the architectural integrity of the station. Our innovative approach to the DLR overhanging sections demonstrated our ability to develop effective engineering solutions that minimise disruption to operational railways.
