Alex Goble on Innovation and Resilience
Hello! I’m Alex Goble, a Project Manager specialising in building projects here at Walker Construction.

Hello! I’m Alex Goble, a Project Manager specialising in building projects here at Walker Construction. My construction career began right after leaving The Towers School 6th Form, when I landed my first full-time role assisting with the construction of The Designer Outlet in Ashford. From day one, I knew this was the path for me. Over the years, I developed skills across groundworks and building disciplines before joining Walker Construction. Now, over 20 years later, I’m proud to still be part of the Walker family.
Current Projects and Overcoming Challenges
Right now, I’m managing two exciting projects. The first is the construction of four new timber-frame, three-storey detached houses at The Varne in Greatstone. The second involves installing a new steel-structured goods lift within the Givaudan compound in Ashford.
Both projects are progressing well, thanks to the strong relationships we’ve built with the developer at The Varne and the Givaudan project team. Of course, challenges are part and parcel of construction. The Givaudan site is classified as an Upper Tier COMAH chemical site, which means we must adhere to extremely high safety standards and respect the manufacturing processes on site. Careful planning and site logistics are crucial to keeping work running smoothly and minimising obstacles.
How Site Management Has Evolved
Site management has changed dramatically since I started. Digital technology has reduced the repetitive paperwork we used to do daily, freeing up more time to focus on on-site activities and planning ahead. AI is becoming an even bigger support tool for site management roles. For example, I currently use AI to double-check take-offs and spot any design changes that might have been missed.
Trends: What’s Here to Stay and What Isn't
I remember when 3D-printed homes were touted as revolutionary, but they haven’t really taken off here in the UK.
On the other hand, offsite construction and prefabricated modules are becoming increasingly common. This approach offers many benefits: sustainability, enhanced safety, cost efficiency, shorter onsite programmes, and improved quality. I believe this method will fundamentally change how we build.
Skills for the Next Generation
For future construction project managers, communication, positivity, and problem-solving are essential skills. Of these, positivity stands out as the most valuable. It helps me approach challenges with confidence and a “can-do” attitude, maintaining composure and motivation even when setbacks occur. Viewing obstacles as opportunities for improvement not only helps me but also boosts team morale on site.
Looking Ahead: Optimism
Despite challenges like skill shortages and rising costs, I’m optimistic about the future. These pressures are driving positive change. Companies like Walker Construction are investing in apprenticeships, digital tools, and workforce upskilling to attract new talent. Meanwhile, cost challenges are accelerating innovation in offsite construction, modular methods, and sustainable materials. These shifts promise greater efficiency and resilience, positioning the industry for a smarter, more sustainable future with opportunities for growth and long-term competitiveness.
