Amelia started work as a graduate with Walker Construction. Graduating in 2019 with honours, Amelia has been recently promoted to Site Manager and continues her studies for her part II in architecture.
We chat with Amelia to discuss her journey with Walker Construction and what she loves most about her construction career.
What is it like to work at Walker Construction?
Every day is different. Yes it can be challenging, but who wants their week to be boring? Walker Construction are passionate about developing their employees and they’re currently supporting me in getting my Part II Architectural Degree. I absolutely love exploring building in theory and then testing it out in practise. I’m supported by the leadership team and my colleagues. Although we work hard, we all know how to have a laugh together too, which is so important! We’re a family.
What is the most exciting part of your job?
For me it’s leaving a legacy. I’ve been in this role for 4 years and already when I drive around I can point out projects I’ve worked on, from new builds through to heritage restoration. I’m proud of my team and the work we produce together.
Tell us your proudest working moment to date?
Handover is always a proud moment, we’ve been working towards the clients concept and then the day comes when we can hand over the keys and present their concept in reality. I think that’s why I love construction so much, it’s so tangible. Buildings are so important, sounds silly but I believe you can feel the history in the walls of buildings, there’s always a story to be told. So it’s always a proud moment to have involvement in a project that means something, for example when we worked at Walmer Castle. It was the first new build on the historical grounds in hundreds of years … We made history with that project.
What did you want to be when you grew up?
A farmer. I don’t know why, I just liked the idea of working outside with the elements and giving back to the community. I really like animals too, especially cows … I do love a cow.
Where do you see yourself in 10 years?
I want to continue growing my career. I’m excited about the next 10 years, I will graduate in 4 years, and then the sky is the limit. I would like to keep working my way up the ladder and supporting young people who see a future for themselves in construction.
Would you recommend Walker Construction as an employer and why?
Yes, Walker Construction look after their employees. If you want to grow as an individual, if you’re passionate about something and you’re dedicated then you’ll go far in this company.
What do the Walker Construction values mean to you?
I enjoy and celebrate the fact we’re a family business. The company celebrates its own family heritage and values all of our own families. I like working for a company that’s human and understands we’re all human too, not just a number.
Give us an example of why Walker Construction is a happy place to work?
We all support one another. When deadlines are looming there are always offers of help from all corners of the business, we’re one big team.
In short, do you love your job?
Yes, and I’m grateful for that.
