Lidl

Walker Construction (UK) Ltd was awarded the contract to construct a new backnische extension and condenser area to the east elevation of the existing Lidl store in New Milton.

The works included the installation of a new interior floor, walls, ceiling surfaces and mechanical & electrical equipment.  We also carried out works to the car park providing an extension to the existing parking area involving new tarmac, paving, new drainage and drainage alterations in to a newly acquitted adjacent site at 45 and 47 Lymington Road.

There were additional works on this project which comprised of the replacement of existing manhole covers and frames within the car park; additional surfacing to the footpath; jet washing to the existing below ground drainage system; additional surfacing to the existing car park and the replacement of Rockpanel cladding boards.

We did have some challenges to work through on this project.  The works were carried out while the store was fully operational so we had to install acoustic hoarding to mitigate the noise into the store while the works were in progress.  All plant and materials had to be transported into the worksite through the store while it was closed ready for the next shift.

We had to carry out works inside a restricted space within the car park to allow customer parking and deliveries to the store to continue on a daily basis, this was managed by holding daily meetings with the store manager to confirm times of the deliveries.  Lastly we had to work with specialist subcontractors from Germany due to construction methods, so the language was an issue at times.

There was value engineering on this project, we were able to offer the client a saving of £9404.87 by designing out the need for a new petrol interceptor with the design of the new below ground drainage system, and this also helped reduce the construction period.  A further saving was given £836.81, by retaining part of the existing structure and designing the new steelwork around the existing section of wall, this also helped reduce the construction period.
