Steve Walker

Steve Walker

Chairman

Steve started working for the family in 1979 when they opened the Tool Hire Centre, he worked his way up to Managing Director by 1982. In 1987 he took over as Managing Director of Star Plant, the family’s plant hire company, which he managed until it was sold in 2006. He was then appointed Director of Associated Divisions at Walker Construction and in April 2012 was appointed to the position of Company Chairman.

Phil started at Walker Construction in 1993 as a Site Agent specialising in the rail industry and for 13 years was gradually promoted to Senior Site Agent, Contracts Manager and then to Divisional Rail Director. His experience has successfully helped to deliver schemes focusing on safe, timely delivery.

During 2012 Phil progressed to Safety Director and has been instrumental in driving the Companies behavioural based safety programme ‘Safety by Choice’. In January 2013 he became Managing Director for the company.

Phil possesses strong leadership skills, with extensive management experience across Building, Civil Engineering and Rail projects. His refined skills and expertise empowers Walker Construction with a valuable approach to and understanding of, new business development, financial management principles, entrepreneurial with commercial acumen. Phil has created a results driven culture within the company. Oriented with a positive approach to management, design and construction, his approach brings a clear focus on safety, high quality and collaborative efficiency.

Paul King

Paul joined Walker Construction (UK) Ltd then known as Walker Brothers (CE) Ltd as Assistant to the Group Accountant in 1987 and later became involved with The Tool Hire Centre to bring in a computerised hire and financial system. Paul was then seconded to Star Plant Ltd in 1988 as Company Accountant reporting to the Group Finance Director and eventually promoted to Finance Director at Star Plant Ltd in 1991. On the incorporation of The Tool Hire Centre Ltd in 1995, Paul was appointed Finance Director and in 1997/98 he worked closely with the Managing Director negotiating the sale of The Tool Hire Centre to Speedy Hire after having been approached by them. Paul was also instrumental in negotiating the sale of part of the business of Star Plant Ltd in 2003 and also in its final sale in 2006 to Skelton Plant Hire.

In 1998 Paul was also appointed as the Finance Director of Walker Management (UK) Ltd, a family owned company set up to own and manage the family’s property portfolio and administer the family pension fund. From 2002 onwards Paul started to become involved with financial and tax planning strategies of all the family owned companies.

In 2011 he was appointed to the board of directors for Walker Construction (UK) Limited as a Director and Company Secretary dealing with the overview of legal, human resources and financial matters. Paul was then appointed to his current position as Finance Director of Walker Construction in September 2012.

Martin Watts

Martin started working for Walker Construction over 30 years ago. He has progressed through many roles, learnt invaluable skills and is a valued asset to the team. After leaving school in 1982, Walker Brothers (Civil Engineering) Ltd as we were known then, sponsored Martin to attend the Bircham Newton Training College in Norfolk. After spending a year at the college he began his career on site as a general operative.

Martin progressed to a ganger where he started supervising and delivering a number of small tasks. Three years later he advanced again to the position of site foreman where he was responsible for managing the day to day running of the site labour. Ten years after joining the company he was promoted to Site Agent running numerous projects at once. In 2005 Martin was promoted to Contracts Manager for the Southern civil’s division reporting directly to the Board of Directors. During 2014 we restructured the business and Martin took over as Southern Area Manager running both the Civil Engineering and Building divisions with a turnover of £28 million. Martin’s previous experience has meant he could develop strong leadership skills, expecting high quality delivery and has a good understanding of client expectations.

Martin has further developed his career by being promoted to the position of Director in July 2017.

Darryl Harvey

Darryl started working for Walker Construction in 2002 and has been a valued member of the team as an experienced Contracts Manager, running operations from the Northern office in Buckinghamshire. Having worked in the construction industry since leaving school, Darryl has worked in both the building and civil engineering disciplines, working extensively in both the public sectors such as HMP prisons, NHS, education, police and the military, as well as the private sector for developers and commercial clients such as Tesco.

Before commencing his employment with Walker Construction, Darryl worked for F J Morris Contracting, working his way from Site Operative to Site Manager where he gained an extensive knowledge base on the workings of the industry and gained valuable experience which today is put to good use in understanding and recognising potential issues. He has a strong track record of effective project management and value engineering. Darryl achieved promotion to Construction Director in July 2017.

Kevin Hogwood

Kevin Hogwood

Corporate Service Director

Kevin started his career as a Building Services Design Eng, with the Civil Service. Kevin has experience in running small business units in all aspects of Management. His experience also includes the design of Aviation Ground Lighting (AGL) for the RAF & USAF, procurement and management of Operation & Maintenance contracts for various building types and services for various Military Establishments in the UK.

Kevin has worked on many prestigious buildings such as Buckingham Palace, Clarence House, Foreign & Commonwealth Office to complex’s such as Bluewater. Practically, Kevin has been Senior Commissioning Engineer on numerous blue chip projects for M&E services including Fire systems & Transportation systems, at such locations as Canary Wharf, Belmarsh Prison, Guys Hospital & Nat West Tower. Kevin was also involved in various ‘on the ground’ Bomb Blast assessments during the 1990’s following terrorist attacks on the UK.

An experienced Project Manager, Designer and CDM practitioner, Kevin has lectured in the Traffic Management Act to various statutory utilities and on other subjects as CDM, Safety in Excavations, Drugs & Alcohol and Safety Awareness, etc. Kevin was the Divisional Manager of a Multi-discipline Construction Support Services Consultancy for Walker Construction but is now the Director of Corporate Services for the company overseeing technical functions in addition to line managing Compliance, Health & Safety, Business Development & Training. Kevin is also responsible for the company’s business strategy leading the way in creating a more sustainable business.

Kevin is an active member serving on the education & training committee of the IED assessing membership qualifications for the institution as well as for the Engineering Council and is a member of the degree accreditation Panel for the Institution. Kevin is a member of the South East branch of the CIOB taking up the position of Chair in 2016. Kevin is also an Accredited Course Assessor for APS Courses, and a License Reviewer for the Society for the Environment regarding accreditation of CEnv qualifications.

Kevin has recently become a Director of the National Federation of Builders (NFB) upon taking over as the Federations Southern Chair.
