Battling Recruitment Fraud

False Offers of Employment

It has come to our attention that various individuals and organisations are contacting people offering fictitious employment opportunities at Walker Construction. Such scams are fraudulent and intended to defraud or obtain personal information from the victims. By drawing the public’s attention to the following information we hope we can prevent people becoming victims of this fraud and at the same time, disrupt those who perpetrate such frauds.

What is recruitment fraud?

Recruitment fraud involves the advertising and offering of fictitious job opportunities via legitimate online services, bogus websites and unsolicited emails. The offers, which claim to be from Walker Construction or to relate to real Walker Construction job opportunities, are intended to obtain personal data and/or financial payment from the victim.

How to identify recruitment fraud?

  • These frauds often require recipients to complete bogus recruitment documentation, such as application forms, terms and conditions of employment or visa forms. The Walker Construction name and logo, or versions there of are often featured on the documentation.
  • In most cases, there is an early request for personal information such as address, date of birth, CV or passport details.
  • Email correspondence is often sent via free web-based email accounts such as Yahoo.com, Yahoo.co.uk, Gmail.com, Googlemail.com and Live.com.
  • The perpetrators frequently use telephone numbers beginning with +44(0)70 instead of official company numbers.
  • In order to make the offer more attractive, the fraud may include an offer from the scammers to pay a large percentage of the fees that they claim are required to process the application, with the victim being asked to settle the balance.
  • In many cases, there is an insistence on urgency.
  • Signatures and email footers are very often basic, and often unprofessional in their wording.


Walker Construction employment policies and procedures involve personal interviews in most cases, and candidates who seek employment with us are never required to pay us any sum of money in advance.

What do we do?

  • Walker Construction will never send job adverts or job offers from a Gmail, Live, Hotmail or Yahoo email address.
  • All vacancies are advertised on our website.

What should you do?

Do...

  • Consider reporting the matter to your local law enforcement agency, police or online to Action Fraud, the UK’s national fraud and internet crime reporting centre.
  • Should you choose to report this matter, ensure, wherever possible that the original emails, complete with all original content, email headers and subject line are submitted. This is important for any subsequent investigation.

Do not...

  • Respond to unsolicited business propositions and/or offers of employment from people with whom you are unfamiliar.
  • Disclose your personal or financial details to anyone you do not know
  • Send any money. Walker Construction do not ask for money transfers or payments from applicants to secure a job or a visa to enter into the UK, either as an employee or as a contractor.
  • Engage in further communication if you believe the communications may be fraudulent.
