The Company was founded in September 1964 by brothers Hector, Stephen and Ray Walker as Walker Bros (Civil Engineering) Ltd sons of Reginald Walker. Originally operated from Edmonton, North London specialising in paving works for local authorities. The family moved to Folkestone, Kent in the late sixties which saw the Company expand its range of activities to include Highway, Structural and drainage works. Ideally placed for the expansion in East Kent in the early seventies the Company concentrated on high profile works within that area and building on new local client relationships.
In 1982 Hector Walker retired as Director. His son Raymond H Walker was appointed as Managing Director the same year. The Company enjoyed steady growth in the early eighties with new operations within Rail works and the opening of an area office in Essex, there followed a period of consolidation in the late eighties. However, the start of a new decade saw the appointment of new Directors and the opening of another area office in Surrey.
In October 1993, Walker Construction gained Quality Assurance to BS ISO 9002.
In 1996 Stephen and Raymond Walker retired as Directors, seeing the start of a new era of non-family member Directors. The company name changed to Walker Construction (UK) Limited, this was to better reflect our move into Building and General Construction works, also at this time we moved to a new Head Office in Park Farm Road and opened new offices in Norfolk and Buckinghamshire. Additional services opened such as Traffic Management and Signing Operations. This Division was further expanded in 2003 with the acquisition of a Lining Company.
In October 2001 the company upgraded Quality Assurance Management System to BS ISO 9001. We also hold Environmental Accreditation to ISO 14001 and Safety Accreditation to OHSAS 18001. Walker Construction has an accepted Principal Contractor Licence valid from 1st March 2008, sponsored through Network Rail as well as achieving Investors in People Accreditation among others.
2006 saw new appointments to the board of Directors and by 2007 continual expansion moved regional offices into further areas of the country adding more specialist divisions to enable us to become a multi-disciplined company, prepared to meet new challenges in the future.
December 2012 Raymond H Walker stepped down as Managing Director after 30 years in the position and the board appointed Phil Webb as Managing Director from 1st January 2013. Phil Webb has been with the company for over 20 years stepping up from his previous role as Rail Director.
