Canterbury Road, Hawkinge, Kent, CT18 7BN

Value: £750,000
Contract: JCT Intermediate Building Contract
Duration: 11 Months

The project formed part of an ongoing programme for school improvement works. The objective was to build a new extension to the existing school to create and additional three classrooms and to build an extension to the school’s canteen to cater for the school’s additional requirements. The works were programmed and carried out in 3 phases for minimal disruption to the schools working day and taking full advantage of school holidays to carry out specific tasks to the build with no staff or pupils on site.

Phase 1; Construction of the New Classroom extension, this was a traditional build with concrete foundations, beam & block, brick and block, cut and pitch roof and designed M&E. This phase was completed and handed over to the school before the end of the schools Easter break ready for the additional influx of children.

Phase 1a; Construction of the New Kitchen extension, this was carried out at the same time as the classroom extension. This was a traditional build with concrete foundations, beam & block, brick and block, cut and pitch roof and designed M&E. This phase was completed and handed over to the school before the end of the schools Easter break ready for the additional influx of children.

Phase 2; During the Easter Break all the internal demolition works were carried out “Break Through” into the new class rooms and kitchen extension, including the making good. This was to give us the time and space to carry out the works with no children or staff on the premises thus increasing production and reducing risk. All works were completed to the agreed programme dates.

Phase 3; To install the new kitchen equipment into the new kitchen extension and complete industrial kitchen fit out works. The existing kitchen equipment was also relocated into the new extension giving more space for the kitchen staff to work safely to prepare and serve the children there dinners.

All works were carried out as per the construction programme and the final account was within the budget. There no complaints or issues on this project just praise from both the school and the local authority. During this project we have worked collaboratively with the school’s Head Teacher, school staff and local authority with regards to programming the works to minimise disruption and weekly progress meeting to discuss forthcoming works.

Quote received from the Head Teacher;

“I just wanted to drop you a quick line now that we are getting towards the end of the project to say what a wonderful team you have working up here. I am sure you know that but I really feel it needs to be said.

The guys on the team are nothing but polite, respectful, cheerful and most importantly exceptionally hard working. Not once have I had a complaint from a parent, teacher or child about anything they have said or done, in fact the opposite - many, many compliments. They are a real credit to your company. Matt’s leadership of them is without doubt, excellent. It is clear he runs a very tight ship and has high expectations in regards to quality of work and behaviour from his team. He is held in very high esteem by staff and children alike. In fact after the Easter holidays Matt was talking to me as the children came into school and each one of them shouted a cheery ’Hello Matt’ to him!!!

"In one way I can’t wait for you to leave site, on the other we will miss the camaraderie of your hardworking team

They are a real credit to you!”
