Denge Water Treatment Building

Denge Water Treatment Building

Dungeness, Kent

Value: £800,000
Contract: Institution of Chemical Engineers (IChemE)
Duration: 8 Months

This Denge Water Treatment contract was to install a facility so that the old water supply for Dungeness Power Station could be cleaned and filtered to drinking water standards and fed back into the water supply. The works included construction of a new steel framed cladded building with concrete floors and floor drainage facilities and the installation of new underground pipe-work for connection into the water mains and access roadways for deliveries. The building that was installed was designed to a secure specification so an enhanced security rating 4 to LPS1175 and LPBC standard was used which including all shutters, grills, vents and cladding.

The challenges on this project other than the timescale were the extreme weather conditions that are experienced in this part of the country. The weather was difficult to monitor which made weather dependant tasks challenging to plan, especially the se of cranes. The site is located near Lydd airport and alongside the main train tracks to Dungeness Power Station as well as being located within a SSSI area and nature reserve.

Close liaison with all parties and collaborative working with the suppliers and sub-contractors ensured for a more flexible approach to the programme due to weather but without affecting the completion date or standard of workmanship.

The contract was completed in time and on budget to the satisfaction of all stakeholders especially the water company, and local ecologists.
